In the late 1960's, Steve served as a Chaplain Services Specialist and clerk in the U.S. Air Force, and in 1968-69 was stationed at an air base outside of Izmir, Turkey (the Bible city of Smyrna). While there, he realized that the Turks were not being evangelized and that their government was hostile to any attempts to present the Gospel.
He began witnessing and distributing Gospel literature among Turkish soldiers and friends; and, because the only Bible he could find was in archaic Turkish, he hired a Turk to translate portions of Scripture into modern Turkish. When Turkish authorities learned of his evangelistic activities, they threatened to put Steve in prison. Because of this, the Air Force hurriedly transferred him to West Germany. This was fortunate, because millions of Turks and Kurds live in Germany, and missionaries are able to work among them openly. Steve was able to make contact with such workers and gained much help for his future work. He completed his military service in 1970.
Steve also began recruiting Christians in the United States to mail "Gospel Letters" to Turkish addresses taken from phone directories and other sources. Since then, thousands of Christians have been involved in this outreach, and millions of Turkish homes have received these mailings.
In addition to his duties as U.S. Director, Steve is the editor of Call to Prayer, keeps others informed of needs and opportunities among Turks, and speaks in churches, schools and the media on Islam and Turkish ministries.
